Authorship & Citation Guidelines

Ensuring proper recognition of contributions made by the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBMI) and its personnel to scientific research projects.

All manuscripts, presentations, and posters resulting from work supported by CBMI must cite or acknowledge the center’s assistance. Any substantial contributions by CBMI personnel should be recognized through co-authorship or formal mention. Authorship and citation expectations should be established at the beginning of every project.

This requirement applies to all oral and written presentations, disclosures, and publications resulting from analyses of CBMI Research Repository datasets.

Infrastructure Paper Citation

Please cite the underlying infrastructure paper in all future work using CBMI Research Repository datasets:

Sample Acknowledgement Statement

“The dataset(s) used for the analyses described were obtained from the CBMI Research Repository, which is supported by institutional funding.”

This requirement is stated in the Data Use Agreement and system use terms. Please reach out to informatics@health.missouri.edu if you have any questions.

Authorship should be granted when an individual contributes substantially to the research, for example:

•Significant involvement in the conception and design of the project
•Contribution to data collection, analysis, and interpretation beyond routine practices
•Participation in drafting, revising, and critically reviewing the manuscript
•Final approval of the version to be published

Acknowledgements should be given to individuals who contributed but do not meet authorship criteria, such as:

•Providing essential technical assistance
•Involvement in data collection without engaging in analysis or interpretation
•Offering administrative help and logistical support
•Proofreading the manuscript

⚠ Acknowledgement Alone Is No Longer Sufficient

As of 2026, a general acknowledgement of CBMI support does not satisfy our data use terms. All work resulting from CBMI Research Repository datasets must include a formal citation of the underlying infrastructure paper. Acknowledgement statements may still be included but cannot replace the citation requirement.
